AGR vs. OEM power steering

Due to breaking my lower steering shaft and needing to fix my loose steering column, I have decided while I will have this all apart, to upgrade to power steering. I have been looking at the steering boxes from AGR and was wondering if anyone has used them? If so how do they perform, and are they worth the extra green? or is just trying to find a box and pump off another jeep the best bet. Thanks as always.

Re: AGR vs. OEM power steering

As far as price of arg and a new saginaw from a dealer (not parts house) there are real close in price. The AGR is a much better box than the stock box but to be used correctly you would need the AGR pump too. As far as jeep models any gm saginaw from the many model will work. At $25 each in junk yard off low mile late model gm vehicle I can replace one a year for 18 years before I come close to the price of the new AGR. Not saying it a bad box just too much money for my taste and I feel a junkyard model is equal in quality for what I use my jeep for.

Re: AGR vs. OEM power steering

Do you know of a particular GM model and year range off hand that would have the 17:1 ratio or (even better) the variable ratio box? I'm re-doing a few things on this next build-up that I didn't do exactly the way I wanted the first time around.

Jeepskate, I believe any of the 4-bolt boxes from rear drive Cadillacs are the variable ratio ones. That's what I used in my old '70 CJ5.

Thanks. I guess I'll go salvage yard hopping after the holidays.
