So my son just picked up a 1974 cj5 that is really solid for a 74. He got it for more of a summer time driver in town but pretty sure he will end up in the back 40. So Jim or will since I know you guys poke around here still. Do you guys remember if he can get away with 4" springs and not changing the rear drive line or should we go with a 2.5.. He said he would like 33's but would be ok with 31's.
Great find! IMO 31s are plenty big for a short 5, and they might fit with stock springs. They fit under my stock 7 but the fronts rub on the fenderwell at full lock.
He pulled off the new 235/75/15 hankooks yesterday and sold them for$325 and ordered a st of dick cepeks from one of our vendors that had them on close out for $99 each. 31x10.5/15. They rub on front of leaf spring at full lock but they are the stock white wheels. Thinking he is going old school with it. He is going to get some 15x8 wagon wheels and he is running white letters out. If he does do a lift it will be 2.5.
An option is to have a cv front driveshaft cut down, change out the rear output and rotate the rear axle up. I'm not familiar enough with the cj5 to know if it is long enough. My cj7 rear driveshaft with the automatic is short but the quadratrac also lowers the rear output a few inches.
Well he was driving it through the hay field the other day and found a huge ground hog hole. Big enough it stopped the jeep dead in its tracks. It bent the driver front leaf spring. I told him to go pull one off of my 74 out back but it turns out mine are lift springs. I didn't put them on so I had no clue. For now he is going to pull the other three so the jeep will be level and drive it for the summer. He is going to regear my wide tracks from the scrambler and put them in this winter.
Yep before I knew it, he was pulling those 31's off and sold them for $350. Only had two hundres miles them. Wish I knew what he was up too so I could have put them to the side in case you wanted them. Now I'm having to Jack his paycheck because the falken mt's he ordered cost quite a bit more...
