Need to upgrade my battery in 88 YJ

I'm still running the group 56 size battery in my YJ because it fits without any modification. After a terrible bout of luck with new style Optima Yellow tops, I would like to put an AGM style battery in because I squirt fluid out of my battery when I get a little "sideways" wheeling. The group 34 optima would only fit with a height adapter that came with it - it doesn't work with other batteries - I tried an exide orbital and it would NOT stay put with the adapter.

I was curious what you guys are running that have done a motor swap. That little battery has a hard time turning over my 4.3 V6 when its cold or really hot. It has jack for reserve capacity too. If my jeep sits for a week it will barely turnover - basically if the voltage drops below 12.5v it won't start sometimes. 2 weeks you can forget it. If I leave a trickle charger on it then no problem - off the charger the battery will be close to 13v. I had one yellow top 4 years ago that was fine - the jeep could sit for months with no issues - after that no good optimas for me.

I would like to get a better CCA for the Chevy motor like the old optimas - maybe an Odyssey? I just don't know how to get a physically bigger battery in the YJ's battery tray. I also understand that the 87-90 battery trays are different than the 91-95s are - don't know how though.

Any battery upgrade/fitment suggestions?

Hank

Wow - nobody runs anything in their YJ but a stock battery? Reread my post - the Exide Orbital DID NOT work.

Recently I've heard some bad things about Optima, namely that they got their reputation from batteries identical to ones they supplied to the military, but now are making junk look-alikes just for the consumer market.

Sorry I can't help with your YJ problems; I have a stock size battery tray in my CJ.

EVERYTHING's easy for the guy who doesn't have to do it.

My understanding is that Optima holds the patent on the 'dry cell' and everybody else is doing it under license. We have used red or yellow tops for years and we too have begun having problems {fail} with them. If you will, post any experience you have with any of the others. I have recommended Optima's to many [the yellow top in my TJ is over 10 years now and starts like it did when new] but no more. Dan

Sounds like you have a voltage leak in some circuit in your Jeep, while it's off.
I've had great service from the Duralast from Autozone.

Picked up a group 34 size Odyssey at summit in McDonough GA while on a trip for work. Guys over on Pirate say I should be able to fit with very little modification.

I realize the Diehard Platinum is an Odyssey and costs less, but I had some summit bucks saved up and a coupon - so it was only $150.

Gonna try and install tonight.
