Finally worked on the red jeep

I finally took the time to dig into the red jeep's engine to check out the timing chain and see if I could figure out where a bad oil leak was coming from. I was relieved to find they were related. I got new parts put on last night and started it for the first time in almost 3 years this morning. It seems to need a carb rebuild now though.

That is the loosest chain I have ever seen! It's sad when our rigs sit so long.

What stump runner said. How on earth could it run long enough to get into that condition?

Explains why in the last few weeks it ran, when I went over a sharp bump in the road, it would run like it had a partial blockage in the intake. Then the next time I started it, it was fine till I hit a sharp bump again.

I took the carb apart a bit today and cleaned the needle and seat. When I started it this time, it purrs like a new engine. I have to get a battery and borrow a timing light next. Then flush the brake fluid, it looks pretty brown.

Next project: the green jeep lost the front pinion bearings the day before Thanksgiving. I have to pull the axle housing to drop it off to get fixed. While I have it apart, I need to redrill the disk brake caliper brackets to index them correctly on my drum brake knuckles.

Probably won't be able to make it this year either, but not because of the jeep. I put insurance on it and drove it around the block today. Going to try to get a plate for it tomorrow. Then a bath on the outside and clean out the stuff that's been stored in it for the last 2-1/2 years.

Last year there wasn't much interest. As I recall there were Toby and me, Dan, Dale and one of his sons, Zack, and James and a buddy of his who's name I don't remember. And most of them were only there Saturday.

With the tax increases it doesn't look like things will be much better this year. By this time in past years there would already be a thread asking when we're going to do it and another asking who was going, and maybe a third asking who was bringing what food. I can be there, and I'm sure Toby would go, but tt sure would be nice to see some commitments from people who haven't been for a couple of years.

I'll start a thread and see who chimes in.
