gearing...

Hi,

I have a CJ7 with 2.73 gears...the rear is out...I found a pair of stockers with 3.54 gearing...what kind of difference am I going to notice if I made that swap?

I've got a FI 4.0 head on a 258, 4 speed and dana 300 if that helps...

Also, is there a place that states about how many CJ7s (percentages or whatever...) came with 2.73 vs. 3.31 vs 3.54 vs 3.73 vs. 4.10?

Thanks!
Patrick

Which 4-speed do you have? If it's the T18A the 3.54 is a good gearset - exactly what I have and it works very well. If your D300 has the 3.something low range it will be even better. My Dana 20 with the 2:1 low range gives a 1st/low that's slower than walking speed. The only time I want anything lower is when crawling through rocks, which I don't encounter often in the mid-west. With the 258 cruise is comfortable at 65, which is as fast as the rest of the chassis is comfortable.

EVERYTHING's easy for the guy who doesn't have to do it.

To answer your question, yes you will notice a difference. A 3.54 or a 3.73 are a good choice for a non over drive tranny with near stock tires. Jeep put that stupid 2.73 in just to satisfy government regulations for fleet mpg.

My 79 was stock with 3.54 gears.
