Identifying a D44 on A TJ

How can I tell if my TJ has a D44 axle? It is the 2000 Sahara model with the 31" tires. I read in another post here on this board that the Sahara with 31" tires has a D44 and 3.73 gears.

The D35C cover looks rounded, whereas the D44 cover looks like it has sides on it. Do a search on the subject, I know it's been discussed before, good luck!

You can also check the stamps that are on the pumpkin. There is also a little tag that should be bolted on with your cover plate to tell you what your gear ratio is. When I spoke to the dealer he said that all new TJ's that come with the 30" tire package come with the D44. I guess it depends on when you got yours.

I may not like what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

Heres a link to some pics to id your axles.

Another quick way for the TJs is the Dana 44 has a metal fill plug and the Dana 35 is rubber or plastic.

There should be a Stamp on either the webs at where the tubes enter the housing or on the housing below the pinion. dana is usually pretty good about identifying their diffs with a stamp.
