4.0 Power?

I'm looking to buy a used TJ w/ 5spd this summer and was wondering about the power of the 4.0? My mom has a 00 4.0 Cherokee, Auto, is the TJ's power anywhere comparable to this? Right now I drive a Frontier w/ a V6 and am hoping it will be a noticeable step up.

Re: 4.0 Power?

If it has the 3.07 gears and 31" tires it'll be a dog. Look at the rear axle tag to see what it has for gears, you're looking for 3.54 or 3.73's. Also, the larger the tire, the less performance you'll feel. If you throw 205's on a 4.0 TJ it'll feel like a race jeep, but you'll also hurt it's feelings.

Re: 4.0 Power?

Depends on how old your mother's Cherokee is. But shortweel base jeep is lighter and you should notice more power! Jeff

Re: 4.0 Power?

Hers is a 2000, on Jeeps website it only shows the 4.0 5spd with 3.07 gears. What gives?

Re: 4.0 Power?

In 1997 the 3.54's were offered as the optional ratio for the D35C and D44. In 1998 and subsequent model years, the optional axle ratio was 3.73's. The stock gear ratio for the 4.0 is 3.07, which is great on the highway for 80 mph, but the lower gear ratios are better everywhere else. The low gear ratios are usually accompanied with a Trac-Lok limited slip. All Limited slips have the lower ratios, but not all lower ratios have the limited slip.

Re: 4.0 Power?

my 2000 tj has 3.54 gears with a dana 44 and a 5 speed....it goes pretty good, but i have to compare it to my other jeeps....and thats not fair.. they both have healthy v-8's, and one has 4.56 gears

Re: 4.0 Power?

How does it have 3.54's? I thought Chrysler went to 3.73's on all subsequent TJ's, am I wrong? When we had the rear axle replaced, the dealer said the same thing, and it was also the reason the axle took a week to get. Of course, it was before the 2000 model year came out. Are you positive it has 3.54's?
