Amazing what people want for Jeeps now days

I have been looking for a backup vehicle for the wife and I. My TJ is so far behind right now and after a recent major breakdown in both our daily drivers, I want a reliable backup. Started off on craigs list.

1997 130,000 decent jeep but with tranny that is going out and will need replaced as well as some running issues that are not throwing codes, cracked exaust manifold and in desprate need of new brake lines. his price 3500. Edmonds says in that condition 1400 to a private party dealer sale 2100. I know I can get take care of the work for under 1k and then see what else it needs. I offer 2k, he is set on no less than 3, Nice guy but not very realistic and we pass.

I decided after looking at a couple others that were over priced for what they are used is a bad Idea, and we will look at new. CRAP. I cant believe what they wanted for a TJ. 26+ for most that we looked at forget buying a 4 door. They diddnt have any base models.

I am basicly amazed at what it cost to get into a jeep now days. Back when we used to buy and sell them if I would have offered the guy with the 97 1k he would have been tickled to get that. It has an auto tranny so no easy fixes.

Maybee I am a tight ass, that is possible but I dont see a new vehicle or a used fixer uper for that matter in my faimly's future.

Ya only go around once, best to enjoy it the first trip.

With the economy the way it is you'd think there would b a lot of people trying to sell cheap. Maybe the first guy was upside down in it so badly that his choice was $3K or bankruptcy. Ah dunno. There have to be deals out there. Are there very many listed in the classifieds? Maybe you need to branch out as far as Indy or the Chicago area.

Just get something by the Bash.

Skip on the midwest rust buckets and head west for a rig.

A couple years ago I picked up a '93 grand cherokee in denver for $500, it had $500 worth of MTR's on it, needed motor mounts, exhaust manifold, and the steering was loose. The exhaust manifold came off with a normal length 3/8" ratchet and not a single broken bolt.

I just sold a '90 Chevy pickup that didn't have a spec of rust on it but the body was trashed, still had all the factory brake and fuel lines.

I picked up a '02 2500HD last month outside of Boise ID, not a spec of rust on it, if it was from the midwest the cab corrners and wheel wells would all ready be punky.

I'd start looking in Denver, Boise, Reno, and maybe Vegas though stuff in vegas/ arizona will have sun damage and be dried out. The lack of stress working on western vehicles is worth the trouble and you can throw in an "adventure vacation" brining it back or just ship it. Imagine working on stuff that leaf spring bolts come out without a torch, brake lines don't require vise grips, and floor boards that don't require road signs to fix them.

Haha, I should probably quote that Jeff.

it's about a 95% chance I'm moving to Vegas in June if you want me to keep my eyes pealed for something.

There's a reason every couple years I sware off jeeps and find something "better" that's "cheaper". Jeeps are crazy stoopid expensive as well as parts for them. I'm starting to think the best way to build something is to just start with a pile of parts.

Looked again this weekend. Still Silly. Friend of mine said anything wrangler was out of site right now. I think he may be right. Found a 95 yj last weekend and they guy was at 6500 and wouldnt budge. It had rusty pitted floorboards and some kind of engine noise. I oiffered him 3k which is in like with running yj's around here (usually) he turned me down sayiung 65 or nothing. I got a call from an aquaintence yesterday looking for a 4.0. Said he bought a jeep and it blew up 2 days later. After some questioning lets just say I dodged that bullet. He paid 6000 for it. I knew something didnt sound right in the motor but I couldnt pin it down.

This aint no fun at all.

Jeff, I might be able to sell you a nice CJ for 5 to 6K, if my deal goes thru.

I've found, at least in the K.C. area, that the farther you get away from the larger cities, the lower the price gets. Found the same rigs for 2/3 the price just 75 to 100 miles away. City folk think too highly of thier rides. I can go to Springfield or Manhattan and pay 1 to 2k less for about the same thing.
