2 questions-steering and trans.

Okay Jeep guru's help me out here:

1) What tilt steering columns will bolt into a Jeep, are there any other cars that line up without modification into an 86 CJ-7 manual?

2) What are the best choices of manual or automatic transmission to run behind a chevy 350 and in front of a Dana 300?

Thank you,
Dave

Re: 2 questions-steering and trans.

No DIRECT bolt in columns im aware of, some say there are, other say there arent.

you can buy a new one for a hair over $200

find a used Cj one for about $100

or, if you can measure/cut/weld you can fit any column from a GM car into a CJ.
some guys have been using late 60s/early 70s Caddy columns for the tilt/telescoping feature.

all or most of the electrical connectors will be the same on the modern GM columns ( Jeep actually used a GM column), but the length and spline count can vary.

its as simple as shortening the shaft between the steering box and the end of the column usually.

Re: 2 questions-steering and trans.

1) from everything i've seen, early 80's chevy vans have steering columns that go into cj's easily, and they are all tilt
2) now this is a little harder... manual or auto?
a)manual choices..sm 465 pro.. bolts to engine, easy to find
con..doesn't bolt to dana 300, no O/D
t-18...well it won't bolt to any of this stuff lots of adapters and $$$,no O/D
nv 4500,, lots of $$$..then lots more for adapters. but it is THE best tranny out there..
auto choices..\
th400..easy to find, adapter is $579 to a dana 300, kinda long..making poor driveshaft angles
th350..same as above, doesn't eat as much power, not as strong
th 700r4..same, but REALLY not as strong..does have O/D though
tf 727.. well it would be pretty odd to bolt it to a chevy engine, but it does bolt to a dana 300..
your best bet?? depends on you.. if you have the $$$ get the nv 4500
if not, I'd go sm 465 with an np 205 x-fer case.. i have that in one of my jeeps and the granny low makes up for the not as low/ low range..
sorry i couldn't help, I probably made the decision harder for you...
