Carb and Intake..EGR or non EGER?

I'm about to upgrade my carb and intake. (was looking at edlebrock for both) Presently my 79 304 has EGR but it's disconnected and plugged. I'm in the military and I'm sure I'll eventually move to a state with an emissions test. Is there a performance difference with the no EGR and should I get the EGR versions and just plug it untill I move to an emsissions state?

Thanks in advance.

I'm going the non-EGR route. Many very smart peolpe here will tell you to go with the EGR setup. I just like the cleaner look of the non-EGR. If you are at all worried about passing emissions tests then go with the EGR.

Can you fix it?
I got a welder and a grinder. Heck yeah I can fix it.

Re: Carb and Intake..EGR or non EGER?

i havent messed with a 304 much, but on a later model 360 its hard to get enough advance to keep the engine peppy without spark knock if you arent running the EGR.

It doesnt rob any power, its simple enough to keep it working, and it supposedly reduces in cylinder temp.

Ive had AMC V8s with and without, Mine ran better WITH the properly working EGR

Re: Carb and Intake..EGR or non EGER?

Our '79 304 came with a BRAND NEW Edelbrock intake and a BRAND NEW Holly 4BBL. It was a non-EGR, and the guy who owned it lived in CT. When he got out here to the jest coast, he could NOT get it smogged, and consequently it sat in his garage under a pile of boxes for four years till we came anlong with enough time and money to re-smog it. You think WE didn't shed a tear taking off that intake system, and trading it away for other stuff we needed.......that was the craps! We MAYBE could have done a temporary adapter to get a smoggable 2BBL on there, but with no EGR, we were completely screwed.
