Funny sound, problably a bad thing

On my CJ there is a popping or crackling sound that comes from the engine, carb I think, whenever I take my foot off the gas or downshift. I remember someone had something simmilar a week or so ago, but I don't remember what was said. I haven't been driving the Jeep cause the clutch is messed up. Anyone have some ideas?

Thanks guys

Sean

I can't really give you much help but your sound may also be from a hole or crack in the exhaust manifold. Mine is making popping sounds right now and it's a crack in the connector pipe.

Re: Funny sound, problably a bad thing

It's not really too much like a backfire. It sounds kinda sputtery. The engine doesn't really change or do anything drastic when this happens, but I'm worried if it's the carb or something. thanks for the help

Check out the air injection system.....you may have a bad valve. If you still have the air injection system, that is

Re: Funny sound, problably a bad thing

If you have the air injection system it is probably the diverter valve...I still have not found a source for them...Since I put in my rebuilt motor I took it all off..But I will need one if the econazis take over...LOL...
If anyone knows of a source for them let me know ...I have mostly given up on looking.
Old harleys use to backfire through the carb when they ran lean ,and turn those pretty chromepipes all colors of the rainbow...

I heard that a FORD valve can be adapted over. I think it was CJ-8/5.2 (Marty) that posted that info, but I cannot recall the year model that we were supposed to look for. Marty is exceptionally knowledgeable on smog "issues" We no longer refer to them as PROBLEMS.....it's "issues" now
