I got a CJ7

I just bought an '86 CJ7 in nice shape. What kinds of things should I look for mechanicaly? I have a 258 with a 4 speed. Also, will 31s fit with no mods?
Thanks in advance.

Congratulations!

If it runs good, worry about mechanical stuff just a little bit later. Keep the oil changed, the zircs shot and the other fluids good. If you can, find out when it last had a tune up. Get a Haynes or Chilton's manual and set stuff up on a schedule.

Yeah, it should handle 31's without hassle.

Congrats... and welcome. Stick around here and you'll learn a lot! Also, don't be afraid to ask questions, although it's a good idea to do a search on the subject first.

Re: I got a CJ7

Congrats, On the 31s, they will fit no problem, but you may have some rubbing. I have 31s on mine, with 1 5/8" lift shackles. I would not recommend lift shackles at all, though its been posted that 1" are fine. Personally soon as I can afford greaseable shackles my lift shackles will be trashed. You may consider a one inch body lift, or bigger bump stops.

Re: I got a CJ7

Just by chance did you happen across the elusive late model '86 with the Dana 44 rear axle?
They seem to be a rare find.
If you've got the AMC 20 rear, no fret, but you will definately want to plan on 1 piece axles in the not so distant future.
Lots o luck!

Re: I got a CJ7

No, it's an AMC 20. I've heard about the axles. Are they really that fragile? Also, how do I tell which 4-speed I have?
Thanks for the welcome. I had an 86 brand new, and I had to sell it when my daughter was born. It's been 13 years, but I FINALLY got another one!

Re: I got a CJ7

I think I got a good deal. It only has 69K miles and NEW tires and wheels, 4.2L, power steering, poly bushings in the springs, hard top, console, and a fresh carb. I got it for $5k even.
Did I do ok?

Re: I got a CJ7

The only....OPINION....that matters as far as good deal or not is yours ...there is always someone that could have got it cheaper...BUT DIDN'T..and they weren't around when you made the decision ,so just shine em on.

Congratz on the CJ! Yes, upgrade the axles ASAP. I ran the Mosers and hated them (long story). I'm running Scout 44s now and don't miss the narrow track 20 or 30 at all. Good luck and have fun!
