Easy way to identify Dana

I've got a 2000 wrangler 4.0 with an automatic. I cannot find my window sticker, and I don't remember or don't know how to tell what type of Dana unit I have for the front and rear axle. Is there an easy way? I see the numbers stamped on the cases, can I identify by these? In catalogs, I see that they sell chrome covers for these (not interested in buying) and the Dana 30, 35, and 44 seem to have different shapes (round or square).

Thanks to all who have knowledge in this area and can help out.

Bucko - Those numebrs do mean something but there is no need to figure them out, you've got a dana 30 in the front and dana 35c in the rear. Dana 44s do come on TJs, but the chance of one being on yours without you knowing it is like zero. You are right about the different shapes though, the 35c has a fairly oval shaped cover, where the 44 is more squared off.

There will be a number stamped on the pumpkin also, usually on one of the gussetes going from the housing to the axle tubes.

Re: Easy way to identify Dana

this is easy... the 2000 tj was only available with a rear dana 44 if you got the 30 inch tire and wheel package(with matching spare) AND a 5 speed.. if anyone has seen a 2000 tj with an auto and a 44, it's the first i have seen, and i looked at over 100 before i bought one. if you still arent sure, go look at the front axle in your tj.. pay attention to the shape of the differential cover.. the dana 44 is the exact same shape, but an inch bigger

it's sort of still a cj thingy....see it at http://www.jeepgod.net
