NEED ENGINE NUMBERS DECODED FAST

I need all the help I can from anyone who can decifer block and engine codes for a 258. I've found a running engine ready to rebuild, but I can not find any source of engine or head or block codes for a 258. The codes are as follows: passenger side above the distributor is stamped with this number 005C20 . On the driver side, towards the front, about half way down is stamped this number 3235077. The mechanic at the shop did a V-8 swap into a 80 CJ7 for the owner. We know it runs, too many witnesses. The mechanic wants to let it go for a workable price ( $300 ), and it fits into my plans. I'll rebuild this one while I drive my current 258 around and swap the rebuilt motor over a weekend. All I need is basically the block and crank. I plan on putting a 4.0 head on it, does anyone know if'n the head bolts are the same size ? Best quote I could get on a rebuildable block was $200. This looks to be the better deal..Any good or bad things about this year motor ??? .Any help is appreciated... Thanks all.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Wait till the wife is gone, and upgrade it .

Re: NEED ENGINE NUMBERS DECODED FAST

sure.. its a 1980 258 built on may 20th

first digit is the year.. 0=1980, second and third digits is the month, fourth is the type of moter c=258(1975-1986) and the last two is the day..

Re: NEED ENGINE NUMBERS DECODED FAST

If it is a 1980 block, it already has 1/2" head bolts.
Perfect for a 4.0 head conversion!

BTW: My (same)old link for the AMC charts from that engine exchange outfit no longer works ... drat!
On the other hand, my local engine parts guys can access a procrument site that will pinpoint the year, etc. of any block using the block's serial numbers.
