TeamRush - Holley 4160 Questions

TeamRush,

I just acquired what was represented to me as a Holley 4160 6948 600 cfm carb. The tag says:

Motorcraft
D5TE FA
4L7

I was wondering if you could give me some recommendations for a rebuild kit, Tric-kit?, or other off road mods I should make. Could you also provide the specifics for this carb? Lastly, would you send me a copy of your Holley tune-up guide? [email protected]

Thanks a million

what you have is a factory ford carb. it may be fun finding some parts for it. try http://www.holley.com and see if they can help.

Re: TeamRush - Holley 4160 Questions

The only way I can help you is if it has a List number on the air horn.

Holley may be able to help you, but Ford did some pretty strange stuff...

Most of the time, Ford carbs should be as a source of spare parts only.
Only the most hard core Ford guys I know have the Ford part number lists...
There has never been a published list of them that I know of, and most of the Ford guys that have a list have scavenged them from old Ford parts books, and from first hand experience working on stuff...

See attachment for list number location...

Re: TeamRush - Holley 4160 Questions

FYI,
6948 doesn't show up as a valid number in the list number listings.

6947 and 6979, the two closest it does list, both come back as 600 CFM vacuum secondaries.
I'll check my old books when I go back out to the carb room.

Re: TeamRush - Holley 4160 Questions

TeamRush,

Well, I looked at the air horn and the number is very similar:

D5TE-9510-FA
List - 6948

I'm still looking for information on this carb, but I'm not married to it...yet , so if you think I should put it in the parts bin and use something else, I'm open to suggestions. I'm running a rebuilt 360, performer intake and Comp cams 260H are the only things different than stock.

GRIND NUMBER: A 260H-10
ENGINE: AMERICAN MTRS V8
INTAKE EXHAUST
VALVE ADJUSTMENT HYD HYD
GROSS VALVE LIFT .447 .447
.006 TAPPET LIFT 260 260
VALVE TIMING OPEN CLOSE
AT .006 INT 24 BTDC 56 ABDC
EXH 64 BBDC 16 ATDC
THESE SPECS ARE FOR CAM INSTALLED
AT 106 INTAKE CENTER LINE
INTAKE EXHAUST
DURATION AT .050 212 212
LOBE LIFT .2795 .2795
LOBE SEPARATION 110

Thanks,

Jeeper2

Re: TeamRush - Holley 4160 Questions

It has a list number, so I can help you.... Maybe...
My books are not always correct (they are directly from Holley, but I bet Holley updates the typos and omissions...).

List 6948 doesn't show up in either of my books, but both of them are for performance carbs.
If that carb was used on a truck or something, it will not show up here...

You do have the List #, so go to the Holley web site, find carbs then tech, then email the tech guys.
In a couple of days you will get some kind of an answer, one way or the other...

Ask specifically what number common carb you need to ask for parts for...
Also, have them give you ...
The Discharge Nozzle size, (Shooters)
The Main Jet Size,
The secondary Jet or Plate Size,
The Power Valve Size,
The TricKit Number, and
The ReNew Kit number.

Unless it's just a copy of a common carb that just happened to be made for Ford, my advice is to step back from it.
Used Holleys are a dime a dozen, and those Ford and Chevy truck carbs were a pain in the butt...
If it's a performance car carb, it will directly interchange with one of Holleys standard part numbers...

Good luck, and sorry if I couldn't be of more help...
Aaron.

Re: TeamRush - Holley 4160 Questions

The carb you have (R-6948-A)is a model 4160-C it is from a 1975 Ford F-250,F350,390 engine,std trany.(6000)calif.
renew kit #85R-5097
there is also a R-6948-1A which is out of a 1976 Ford truck,390eng,s/t 6000#
hope this helps.

Re: TeamRush - Holley 4160 Questions

If the above info is correct,
4150 makes it a mechanical secondary, (Double Pumper)
Turn the carb over, and look for accelerator pumps on the bottom of both float bowls.
It should be a 600 CFM, but there is no guarantee with the truck carbs. They had some pretty strange ideas about carb sizing at ford...
