Power Steering info!

Can anyone tell me what vehicles power steering can be salvaged from to install into a 1984 cj. A jeeping aquaintance without access to the internet would like to install power steering in his daughters jeep. He is also looking for a hardtop for same vehicle.
thanks

Re: Power Steering info!

well the gear box.. any jeep.. wagoneer.. j-truck.. yj, tj, and most chevy's have the same box.. for the pump.. mmm.. probably needs one off a 258 6 cyl.. if that is what he has.. and get the brackets with it.. probably could use something off a amc 232.. its the same block.. but might need the brackets for the 258 jeep... i have the brackets.. and would part with them.. since i no longer own a 258..

Re: Power Steering info!

any Vbelt drive saginaw pump ( Gm)
youll need the proper brackets for an AMC 258 tho, check out some AMC cars.

the gear boxes arent all the same, some have different splines to the steering shaft, others have completely different steering ratios, I dont know which are good/Bad, only that they differ. Most Jeeps seem to have really quick turning ratio.

Id suggest a CJ gear, anyother pump/258 brackets to be safe.

Re: Power Steering info!

When I put power steering into my CJ I used the box and pump from a 79 Wagoneer. The spline count and diameter on the input was the same as my old manual box unlike the CJ boxes which have a larger diameter. It's an easy fix though. You just change out the bell coupler on the bottom of the shaft. While it's true that any V-belt Saginaw pump will work, the pulley may not have the right offset to line up with the other pulleys. I used the pump brackets and pulley from an Eagle wagon with the 258. My box is pretty fast as it is a variable ratio.
