Distributor cap question

I have a 86 Cj7 with a 258. I took off my cap to check it and it had that white crusty stuff inside of it. I replaced the cap about 2 months ago with a( I think it was a) Borg Warner Gold Cap and Rotor with the brass nubbs. What would cause this? Would it have anything to due to my Radiator blowing up and getting antifreeze in there? I replaced my Radiator again, with another one. Good thing it was still under Warranty.Anyways I cleaned the Cap up with a file but what would cause this?

Re: Distributor cap question

Check to make sure the breather hose is taking the gasses out of the valve cover. It could be building up and seeping up the distrib. shaft and into the cap where it's condensing when the engine cools off.

Re: Distributor cap question

White crusty stuff on the terminals themselves is corrosion, and oxidation.
It probably induced by moisture and the high temperatures of ignition energy jumping to the posts.

Don't clean them with a file, use contact cleaner in a spray can, and emery cloth.
Women's emery finger nail boards and ink pins with ink erasers work pretty good too.

Those ink pins with the ink erasers on the end are the best kept secret in electrical trouble shooting.
They are long, fairly slim, and clean contacts like nothing you have ever seen before.
I always keep an eye out for freebies at the bank or hardware store, ect...
Same with finger nail emery boards, but they go south if they draw moisture or get wet.

Never leave home with out one if you have a points ignition or a GM HEI...
