weird behavior after transmission filter change

Changed the filter and topped off the fluid (ATF +4) last night in my 00 TJ - now it bogs down after it has been in drive for a few seconds. I haven't tried to drive it yet, just cycled through the gears and noticed it doing that. Tried it twice, left it in a little longer the second time and something (torque converter?) started clicking and I think it would have died had I left it in a second longer.

The only thing that was suspicious - the new filter didn't have metal spacers made in so it squished down when I tightened the bolts down. (whereas on the old one the bolts tightened down on the spacers and didn't squish the filter)

Thoughts?

Could the filter inlet be blocked by the squishing process?

EVERYTHING's easy for the guy who doesn't have to do it.

I don't think so. And, thinking if the flow was disrupted it would cause slipping problems? Going to swing by the parts place and take another look at a new one.

Been pondering all day - is there a way that the torque convertor could be trying to lock? And if so, is that the kind of problem it would cause?

Yeah, that would probably do it, but I know darn little about them autpmatical transmissions.

I just picked up a genuine Mopar filter - going to disassemble this evening, look for issues, put in Mopar filter, reassemble. And hope for the best.

The good news is that it's fixed. The bad news is I'm not sure what it was. I'll go ahead and speculate on what it was:

I picked up a genuine Mopar filter just to eliminate any doubt there. Dropped the pan and filter. Nothing looked unusual and after comparing the old filter to the new one there wasn't much difference. So I proceeded to reassemble. Here's where it gets (a little) interesting -
1) there appeared to be some holes that the filter mounting holes would have lined up with but not lined the hole in the filter up with the pickup. I didn't actually try it since I already had all three bolts started... but wondered if it was possible to mount it in the wrong place!
2) I noticed a pair of wires under the filter, loosened it up and moved them out from underneath. Guessing these could be the wires that control locking of the torque convertor? I didn't see any nicks in the insulation but if there was one and the old filter was pinching them maybe it was causing the convertor to lock. Or the wires could have been preventing the filter from seating, but I don't think that would cause the symptoms I had.

Finished reassembly, topped it off, working perfect. AND! It got rid of the shudder that I was out to fix in the first place!

If you pinched wires, it could have been sucking air in between filter and pickup head,
OR,
You might have pinched the wire enough to have grounded something out...

Anyway, glad to heat you are up and running.
