File and Disk Utilities: Sysinternals Center, Microsoft TechNet

Look at the diskmon and filemon tools specifically.

Also,

Sysinternals Process Utilities

Look at the process monitor and process explorer. These are very good utilities to allow you to see what is going on.

I dont know much about the latest and greatest software fixes for windows. I run FreeBSD mostly. I have one windows pc at home and the only tools ive used are whats shown above, and

CCleaner, Regseeker, and free anti virus.

Good luck.

Not much memory left, I'm getting older. But I can still remember as far back as my first wife - well some things anyway. It's the recent things that I forget.

Oh, you mean the computer - 512 RAM.

Should not be too bad. i am going fishing up in Manistee MI for a week, when I get back lets see where you are at. Run the free AV on Trendmicro and Kaspersky in the meantime.

Last night I put the System Internals in - called Process Explorer now.
Stared at it awhile, made a little sense. Looks like a more complete Task manager.

Kept it on screen all night waiting for the HD to act up -- of course, it didn't!
Murphy's law!

Have a good time fishing!

By the way - some here are talking about AV Virus Protection - I don't have that one.

I have AVG Virus Protection.

Similar names, different stuff.

Out of curiosity, have you checked your power management settings? If they aren't configured correctly, it could be a problem.

The defrag suggestion is one area I was tackle first. Next I would run a complete system scan using your preferred AV and malware scanners. Third, I would open your box and make sure you don't have too much dust on the internal fans and heat sinks. These can cause havoc to a system.

Lastly, download all the latest updates from Microsoft for XP and install them. You may want to find out what drive you have and download and run their diagnostic program. This will tell you if the onboard systems are faulty or if the drive is dying.

Good luck!
