Bastard Tie Rod End?

Hopefully this will get me somewhere...

I currently have a set of custom draglink & tierod made from 1.25"x.375"wall DOM that are drilled/tapped 11/16" for the stock CJ TREs.

After trying to get by using a CJ/YJ/TJ/XJ pitman arm (about an 1"+ too short) and suffering with 60% steering, I'm going to a Waggy drop arm (correct length), but the taper is for the larger Waggy size taper. I don't really want to drill/tap just one end of the draglink for the 3/4" Waggy threads just to fit the pitman... Nor do I want to have 1 odd TRE, but short of welding in the pitman (not real hip on going this route) & reaming to the smaller taper, may be the best option...

So, does anyone know of a TRE that has the small CJ 11/16" threads, but the larger Waggy taper? Part#? Make/model/application?

Try 70 chevy/gmc 4X4. I think that is what you will need. Its been awhile since i did my steering but i think the tre's had small threads and large taper.

What????

Thanks bro! I'll check some books to see if that gives me any additional info...

I was able to find a LH TRE like this (11/16" x GM taper) from Parts Mike. Unfortunately, he said he had no idea what it came from, but thought he could get more. I ordered the 1 he had in stock, so we'll see...

Well, that bites! No only did he neglect to mention the shank was 6" long, it's not even CLOSE to being the GM/FSJ taper!

Jim, are those '70 GM TREs short like the reg. Jeep TREs?

Could you give some data on the large and small diameter of the needed taper, as well as its length.

I have been doing so research using the NAPA web page on this and find there data on taper to be all over the place including some references which show the small end of the taper larger then the large end. If I had some real world data it would help figure which of the numbers they typed in wrong. This would also help my build as I have not figured exactly what to do about a pitman arm

Wilhelm

I will start using Metric only when the duodecimal system is adopted!!

According to my research, a few sources (including the Parts Mike website) say the taper for both FSJ & GM TREs are the same (with differences in the shank dia.) at 1.5"/foot taper.

The taper in the new pitman was confirmed with a GM (1/2 ton) TRE. The taper of the "conversion end" I rec'd from PM was smaller than the GM & larger than the OEM (small Jeep) tapers...

I found a 3/4" shank to small taper TRE listed for Dodge 1500s, but that's opposite of what I need (11/16" shank-larger taper).

I'll haul the digi calipers home tonight and get some exact dimensions for you, but am thinking it may be a lost cause. I also found the new pitman (ordered for a '78 Waggy... box marked '78-'79 Ford), while the correct length, *only* had 3/4" more drop than the pitman I removed for the "universal" DPA...

I think they are i dont remember. Its been so long since i put it together.

If i remember right they are about 4 inch over all. Maybe shorter. Probably about two inches of thread right up to the joint. I cant find any pics of that setup.

Somewhere on the internet i saw a list of the different tre's. It had pics and measurements. I'm thinking it was from MOOG.

What????
