Overdrive

Hi, all -
I have on 04 Wrangler X, 2.7 to 1 transfer case and I've put 4.56 gears in the diffs. I have 31s on the rims. I love the crawl ratio, but now it's way slow on the highway. It's my daily driver so highway is part of life. I'm running 2400 revs at 60 - want to be down near 2000 or lower - like it used to be with its stock 3.07s. Is there a way to replace the present 5th gear with a different 5th gear that would give me a true overdrive? This way I could have a good highway speed without giving up the off-road abilities I've grown to love!

Nope. You can go up in tire size though. If memory serves, your overdrive is around 0.85. If you want to swap to an automatic, the 700r4 is 0.70.

Sorry the first part of this reply isn't going to do you much good but in order to acheive what you're after you should have left your stock axle gearing and installed a 4 to 1 kit in your transfer case. Stock gearing on road, low crawl ratio off road.

I'd say the best way to lower your rev's now is to install larger tires like 33's or even 35's but that's gonna require a lift.

Good luck,
Aaron.:)

Thanks for the replies, guys - it was a shot in the dark. I have a 2" puck lift so plan to go to 32s and that will help - a small bit. I'm told going to 33's and 35s increase the risk of detonating axle parts, etc., so may just buck it up on the highway and get off road more often! :)

And you're right - had I known what I was doing early on, getting the 4:1 would've been the perfect way to go -
