Simply... the ability to have a unique domain name, like "sitetheme.com" as opposed to "somefreehostingsite.com/blah/blah/blah/yourusername"

$4/yr? Good price just make sure it is in your name. It is kind of like your own phone number, or personalized plates. Go to register.com to see what is available, just buy from your guy.

As Thorjeep said, it's like the phone number for the site. Domains need to be registered so that only one entity can use the name otherwise "the net" won't know where to direct the person requesting a site if there is more than one to choose from using the same name. $4.00 is a smoking good price. Most companies offering domain names like Dotster or Monster are resellers and have an account set up with the "master" registration company. You apply for the name, the system checks with the master registry and secures the name if available in your name. This is important because once you own it, it is yours to do as you please as long as you keep the registration current. This means you have to pay a yearly fee to maintain the registration. (Some companies register names they think others will want and then try to sell the rights for a profit.) The reseller pays the master registry company's fee and charges you a little more for the service. But it not like the master registry sends them a bill every month; in fact the reseller has to have the funds to pay for the registration on deposit with the master registry in advance and if the money runs out they are out of business so there is a bean counter at the reseller who keeps a close eye on the balance. I happen to like Dotster but in all fairness my daughter is one of the bean counters and they are located in Vancouver USA, the land of no State income tax.

Another way to describe it is that there is always a domain name involved in browsing the web. Having your own domain name makes the web address shorter, and some people think it adds some credibility for a business. There is now some choice in the Top Level Domain portion such as .com, .info, or .biz.

For an example, if you use Comcast cable TV for your ISP (as I do) you could get something like jeepjunky.home.comcast.net for free. If you pay for a domain you could get jeepjunky.biz through any of the registration companies.
