OT - staying logged in

How long is the default login good for? Sometimes I'll sign on and have to get up for a few minutes and when I come back I'm logged off. It is annoying in that every post is then shown as read and I can't click to the first unread post. Is there a way to make this timeout setting longer?

Will, I passed your question along to someone who knows the board software pretty well. He might have an answer.

I haven't logged in for a long time either, but I have noticed the problems with un-viewed posts. If there are threads that are highlighted because there are unread posts on them, and I do a refresh, they come back with the highlighting turned off. But that's only if they've been sitting on my screen for a while.

Will, could it be a setting in your browser or in your server or router that disengages you after a while?

Have you checked for a loose nut behind the keyboard?

What browser are you using?

You might also do a scon for tracking software...some of the malware will modify your browser settings. SpyBot and LavaSoft are a couple of good ones that are still free......and if you are not using FireFox...good time to start.

I think it's about 1/2hr to 45mins...What happens is your cookie will expire and automatically log you out. This is a security feature of the vBulletin software. It's mostly for people who use public computers...If you use your own try this solution:

When you enter your user name and password to login, click the "remember me" check box before logging in.

By doing this you cookie won't expire after that short time period. However, if your browser deletes your cookies after closing the program (such as firefox), or if you frequently purge your cookies and temp files, than you will have to log-in again the next time (because you deleted your non-expiring cookie).

Hope that makes sense...Try it and let me know what happens.

Will, you are not alone. It happens to me too, especially when I do some research while writing a post message. I am using Firefox and love having multiple sites open in different tabs. So I keep the forum list open in one tab, then open a post-writing window in another tab. Just before I submit the post I go back to the forum list, do a refresh, log-in again if I have to, then go back and submit the post message.

That is a long way to say that you can use another of the tabs to get the cookie refreshed.

For myself, I don't use the auto-logins or remember me's.
