Semi OT Best MPG 4x4 with low range

I'll be putting a fair amount of miles on in the next year or so living in Colorado. I'm planning on picking up a 3/4 ton diesel for truck/ towing duties but am looking for something to rack up the miles on/ explore with. What's the best MPG 4x4 that acutally has low range, can some what easily fit a 235 or 30" tire, fit 2 people and 2 dogs, and arn't super expensive. I want something a little more capable then an AWD station wagon but don't need another crazy trail rig.

Some vehicles i'm thinking about are
-4.0/ 5 speed xj's, suposed to get 22-25mpg
-Toyota 4 runners with a 4 banger
-Geo trackers

Don't forget to factor in the insurance cost. Check with your insurance agent to see what the difference will be for your present vehicle, and also check with them before you buy anything.

Last year I checked the insurance price on two motorcycles I was considering. Same size engine but different styles had a difference of about $800/year.

Also check the difference between Longmont & Granby. Longmont has a bunch of people that commute to Denver so that might raise the general rates higher than the Granby area.

in my Dodge 3/4 Diesel I'm getting about 19 mpg in low. It's Xtra cab can seat six and has an 8 foot bed. I can take it into the mountains but not crawlin like in my jeep. The price of Diesel fuel here in NV is 4 bucks a gal It seams like just yesterday diesel fuel was so much less than gas and I could travel so much farther.

Just posted a Sammie on the Zuk board for a buddy, $2k in SF bay area, if you are interested. BTW: he is a retired auto shop teacher, best person to buy a vehicle from.

I've never seen just 2 dogs driving around in a Sami.

88YJ: Old, noisy, slow, and just generally wonderful. Wheeling Jeep.
04WJ: Less old, less noisy, less slow, daily driver Jeep.

Illinois dogs are smarter and better trained than New England dogs.

But it needs a lot of ballast to work. Where will Andy get that?

Pete

On topic, I would think a Tracker would be cool - it's still a soft top, if they still make 'em that way. ???? Used to anyway.
