I just picked up a hood from a 78 renegade that the owner had completely stripped down to bare metal. Problem was, after he did that he let it sit in his barn for about 6 months un-primed. So significant surface rust has developed. I have sanded it down and for the most part I get nice fresh metal. However, there are some places where I can see dark discoloration clearly indicating where deeper pockets of rust were. Not really pits per se, but I am wondering if there is a rust inhibitor product or eliminator that I should treat this with before using the etching primer. I have no experience with any product.
If I sand too much I think I risk deforming a perfect hood and having to use some filler product which would be a shame.
My goal is to not have to fight rust in a year or two because I did not take appropriate steps now. Let me know your thoughts.
Oh and please don't tell me to get a fiberglass hood and how I will never worry about rust again.
Ask me about my vow of silence!
