100 Acre Wood Rally

Will and I survived the weekend in the 000 lead car. We drove Thursday in sleet and freezing rain that, by the end of the day, piled up two to three inches of mush. Over night it froze into a solid pack of ice on all the special stages. Something turned the ice into stutter bumps almost everywhere, and we drove on that all day Friday and most of the day Saturday. Then, late Saturday, it started to rain lightly, which made the ice as slick as, well, ice, but still bumpy.

Will was my excellent navigator. He immediately picked up the talent of following the route book on the stages, and routing us between stages with the GPS and Delorme software on the laptop. Most impressive!

The Jeep did well, outside of developing a few new rattles, that nobody else would notice in the din of engine noise, top flapping and, of course, all the other rattles. Will noticed that the good old AMC tractor motor was pulling us up mild hills in fourth gear at 20 MPH, and calculated that it was turning turning less than 800 RPM! Spent most of the weekend between 20 and 35.
