What is wrong with people,,, negotiations.

I tried to buy 2 tractors in the last 2 weeks. First one the farmer agreed to a price then changed his mind after I compleeted my end of the deal.

Second on started on Wed when I go a call from and older woman wanting me to stop and look at some items for junk. I look at a decent massey 35 with 2 bad rear rims and tires. While talking to her I found that she really wanted to sell it for use price. I told her it was worth about 400 in junk and advised her I didn't expect her to accept it. After thinking about it for a few days I thought it might make a good tractor to help around the house but knew it was going to cost me 1000.00 to get rubber on it. Figured if I could buy it around 1000.00 it would be an ok deal. I stopped at the hom and talked to her son who countered my offer with 1350. I said I couldn't go over 12 and he said 1300.00 I told him that was more than i wanted to pay but let me think about it. I called on sunday night and asked if I could look at the tractor again and he said tonight. I was going to be late and called to let him know. I got his wife and she had him call me back.

So he wants to know if I stll wanted to give 1200 for it and I said I wanted to look at it again before I could commit to anything. SO then he loudly says forget it it is gone and hung up on me.

I HAD HIS MONEY IN MY POCKET.....

So am I doing something wrong here or are these guys screwy?

Ya only go around once, best to enjoy it the first trip.

That's why I hate buying a selling things. I tell people right up front what Im asking is what I want and not to try and low ball me and if they can't respect that then to walk away... When buying something I will ask what there bottom dollar is because I usually know what it's worth if Im looking at buying something and if it's still to high I tell them no thanks and they will either throw another price at you right away or they will see that it's not going to sale for what they want and usually will ask you what your willing to pay for the item in question, usuallly something Jeep related....

Sad part is, the son will probably end up hauling it off to the yard after it rots for another few months. Too bad.

Is this the only hammer you've got?

All the guy had to do was wait 10 minutes and I would have paid him the 1300.00 I DIDN'T WANT TO PAY THAT MUCH BUT WAS GOING TO.

I am wondering if there was a reason he demanded a comitment on the phone when I was 10 min away. It was almost like I couldn't look at it again unless I paid for it....

Oh well there was alot of out of pocket expense to get it going anyway. So I am looking for a $2000 skid steer,,, Like that is going to happen...

Once you agree to something it's a contract - no longer negotiable. Either buying or selling - if the guy wants to bargain AFTER it's been agreed on, the deal's OFF - no matter what! Even at the original price the ad said - I won't deal with them.

I get a kick out of the yo yo's that call on an ad - "would you take xxx?" (sale) But they haven't even seen it!
I tell them obviously they want to negogiate, so I go UP the difference they suggested.
They say that's the wrong way -
"Not for me!"

There are enough ligitimate buyers and sellers that you don't have to bother with idiots.

And no, I won't take it half way across town or across the state - "to meet them 1/2 way" - if they want to see it - they have to come here! They always play the game after you met them somewhere that it's not what you said it was - and expect you to drop the price further.
"Gomer - Not for sale to you at any price now!"

And - I got a fist-full of counterfeit bills one time - and a couple of "closed accounts" checks. Now we meet at a bank, - we go to the window together - the teller counts out the cash from her drawer to him while I watch, then he hands it to me. If it's any significant amount of money, he'll understand. If they object - it may have been a scam anyway - no loss to you.

A friend advertised a Ramcharger - $2000? - he got over $15,000 worth of counterfeit "certified" checks - some just photocopies, some very bad print jobs on a computer printer, mailed to him. The police wanted them. How can people be so stupid?

It must work sometimes, otherwise there wouldn't be so many scammers around.

negotiating styles

I once bought a (mostly junk) motorcycle off a friend.
He offered it to me for $50 and a set of over-sized VW pistons, and I said okay.
He then, in the next breath, "countered" with offering it to me for $50, the pistons, and a set of new rods.
?
I swear he was serious too.

That's why I HATE buying and selling used vehicles. Some people are good at it, but I guess I am not. It always seems to be more hassle than it's worth. But, I am not a very good salesman. I would have trouble selling a life preserver to a drowning person!

It can go the other way too.

I was buying a Willys wagon - from a dealer! He asked $1100, I offered $1000. He said he needed $1100 for sure. Then he said that included tax, license and smog - and he'd include a extra set of tires and rims for it!
I was expecting all those to be in addition to my offer.
As it turned out, backing out tax, license, smog dropped it to $920! -- Below my offer!
I sold the tires and rims for $200 too, bringing it down to $720. After a few repairs, I sold it for $5000 cash.

Keep on your toes, know what you are willing to pay - and be ready to jump if it's good - or too good!

A friend bought a pickup - he left it where he bought it for a few days till he got help to "drive" it home. By the time he got back it was stripped to the bone The seller claimed it was like that when he bought it. The judge threw it out of court - no proof!
The moral to the story - once you pay for it - get it out of there immediately!
