Anyone have an idea what gear size would have come in a Stock 83cj 7 renegade with a 4.2 T5 trans 300 dana transfer case?
i was thinking 2.73 or 3.08 but i'm not sure..

83 cj7, 258 .030 over, HEi dist, Howell TBI.

With a T5 i would expect a 3.32 or a 3.08, but those are just guesses.

To find out what you have now tape a piece of string to the rear driveshaft and push the Jeep exactly one turn of the wheels. Count the wraps of string and partial turns of the shaft and you should be able to figure out which gearset you have.

EVERYTHING's easy for the guy who doesn't have to do it.

i had a similar 85 and it had 2.73

i tihnk they all had 2.73 standard. the carrier for 2.73 gears only works for 2.73 gears (i think)...so if you go with deeper gears be prepared to replace the carrier.

My '82 came with a 3.73, which was optional.

Ditto for mine. If you really have to know, its time to pull the cover off and count teeth.
