would it be ok ??

hi guys

since my 1980 CJ7 304 V8 frame up project hasent changed from lots of parts on the floor to drivable ....then i was wondering if it is OK to change my plan to.....

put a diesel engine in instead of the V8.....

just writing it makes me make strange faces....

love that V8 sound and had planned a FI V8 swap....but fuel economy will always be a issue....

he en europe we have the Jeep CRD engines 160 HP and it might me possible to put one of those in but i looks like the front driveshaft is on the wrong side ....

what do you guys think ???

I love the idea od a diesel jeep...but sadly its pretty hard to do here in the US since parts are hard to find.

the drive shaft will depend on your transfer case......do you know what
transmissions will fit the CRD engine? if the transmission has an NP231 transfer case, then i think you can swap in a D300 instead, which would put the drop on the correct side.

i havent recearched a lot on ot yet by i looked at a JK on a defence show i was attending in UK it was a Military version af the JK had the CRD engine and had the driveshaft in the "wrong" side...
if my D300 fits it would be great....

but still it will be odd with the diesel sound vs. V8 rumble..

A diesel in a CJ... give it at try. Why not? What's the weight of the engine you're planning on installing? The front suspension may have to be engineered to hold the load if the diesel is heavier.

the engine i was thinking about was the Jeep 2.8 CRD engine
it is used in both the present Jeep GC and the wrangler here in europe with both auto and a 6 speed manual tranny with the new NV241 GII transferbox

the CRD engine has been used for some years now in the
jeep GC. and it would be the most lightly donor for a project.

you only need to flip it if you want a driver side drop like on YJs *edit, mistyped before, fixed it*

if you are doing it to a CJ, no flipping is needed

Little backwards there... if it's coming out of a Wrangler, and going into a CJ it will need to be flipped.

Is this the only hammer you've got?

but the D300 isnt coming out of a wrangler...its coming from his CJ he already has

so it should keep its same orientation and just be mated to the new engine and trans.

am i missing something here?

yep the plan would be to keep my D300 from my CJ and mate it to a 3.1 or 2.8 CRD engine out of a liberty or a GC
