dana 44 bearings

I am replacing the outer seals on a 72 dana 44 with flanged axles. In order to replace them, the bearing and retainer ring have to be removed and replaced. All of the parts stores in the area only list the inner bearing ( B-A10 ) and nothing for the outer bearing. The outer bearing on the axle is tapered with a race. The inner bearing (B-A10) is a sealed unit. No one can tell me why or where I can get the tapered bearing or why they don't list one. Do I have to remove the race and use the sealed bearing??? Need help!!!

Thanks

Re: dana 44 bearings

i just got a flanged dana 44 rebuilt from a 70 wagoneer. the rebuilder told me that the wheel bearing changed from a seperate bearing and race to a one piece bearing.

You do need to remove the race if you are just putting in new outer seals you might want to do the inner seals as well. (removing the races will most likely damage the inner seal.
goes like this:
inner seal -race -bearing -outer seal -retainer -flange.

Re: dana 44 bearings

I could be mistaken, but if memory serves my '74 has no inner seal, as the bearing is lubed by the diff fluid.

Regardless,4wd does have the info, cause I used their catalog as a print to take mine apart a while back.

my fall/winter '97 catalog has this for a number 1-800-333-5535
