Intake Gasket Failure
This is the intake off of my 4.2, dual header, newer aluminum intake, mc2100. This is the gasket thet came with the header and I thought was sealing very well. It has been in service for at least three years.
I am puzzled at the way this gasket failed. It had become spongy along the top edges of the intake ports only, causing it to deteriorate, get sucked in and create a very annoying vacuum leak. All of the intake areas of the gasket look the same to a certain degree.
As you can see, I used some silicone around the intake ports, but left the exhaust dry. It would appear as though the silicone reacted poorly with the gasket material, but only along the top edges. The bottom areas are still solid.
I'm guessing this is just a fluke failure, but thought I would post it up in case anyone has any ideas of what may have caused the failure. For what it's worth, I replaced the gasket with Felpro stock versions, which appear to be much higher quality pieces.
Is this the only hammer you've got?
