Locking Hubs - I thought this was a no brainer

Tonight I pulled the drivers side front locking hub off my stock Dana 30 axle. I removed the five bolts, pull the outer hub off the axle and then removed the retainer ring. Review and lightly pack with grease and slide the whole clutch pack back up on the axle no problem. Now I can't see the groove on the end of the axle to put the retainer ring back on. I need about a 1/16 of an inch and I can't move the clutch back back any more. Help! What have I not done? This was too easy, NOT. I can't believe this. What do I need to do guys?

1985 CJ with a transplanted 94YJ 4.0L motor, T176 tranny, mainly stock otherwise. ><>

Push the axle from the back side and it will usually push out enough to see the grove. Then a little push, push will snap the ring into the grove. It will be easier once you can see the grove.

Ya only go around once, best to enjoy it the first trip.

Pushing the axle from behind works well. Also most outer axle are threaded on the end for a 7/16" bolt. So you can thread one in the end and pull.

I would not recommend grease in the Dial and sliding part of the hubs. Granted in Carolina it is not likely to be an issue but at cold temperatures greased hubs are very hard to turn. I have used a teaspoon or so a ATF with good results. Not much lubrication is needed.
