Towing With A TJ Unlimited
Anyone had experience towing a boat with a TJ Unlimited? I see that they are rated for 3,500 pounds and with my boat and gear, I’m right there. I’ve been using an Expedition as a tow vehicle but short of breaking out the sawzall it’s hard to take the top off.

Well here my 3 cents (increased from 2 cents due to inflation).

Depends on the kind of towing.

Spoting a trailer in your driveway: over load the hell out of it, no big deal.

Towing on relativly Flat ground at low speed, under 35 MPH: I would tow about anything.

Towing in steep hills with long down grades: I would not even get close to manufactures recomendations, without trailer brakes and cearful use of down shifting on down grades.

Towing accross the country at 75 MPH: I would keep it very light well below recomended if I did it at all.

After seeing what my father in law tows with his rav 4 I think anything is possible. He has trailer rakes for the camper he hauls, but not on the 4x8. I am not sure a unlimited is much more than that. But he amazes me.

It also depends alot on load on the trailer and load on the vehicle. I have hauled duce and a half on my trailer, but iw was loaded right and I took backroads.
