There's alot of that sort of stuff going on in Iceland. Lots of good videos of them doing hill climbs, running across rivers/lakes and other stuff. I can't remember where I've seen the videos though.
do a google search for "formula offroad"

I could have had a V8

If I recall, one of the Scandinavian countries would do these events that included "gliding" across a pond followed by a hill climb like that. It was not always straight across, they would have to line up for the climb while on the water. Every once in a while, one would not make it across the pond...

I can remember watching them on ESPN or Wide World of Sports (or something like that) growing up.

You can also try this site. They have an English button.

My dad used to talk about hill climbing around here, the Pembina Hills around Miami, Manitoba. Yes, there is another Miami. Not so nice in the winter. He said he watched competitions with motorcycles and said the stuff they went up was unbelievable. Some with stretched frames and even nitro for fuel. That must have been 65 years or more ago. Men have been competing with engine powered machines for a long time it seems. Pretty much right from the begining. Continuing to digress here, but if you look back at some competition records from turn of the previous century, like land speed records, they ran some pretty impressive machines.

I hope they threw a tow strap on that jeep right before he started to roll backwards on that video clip.

Guess that I would just call it big blocks, 1000hp and big paddles= lots-o-fun.

Bless those folks for having all of that fun and putting it on the net. Several other videos linked on that page, watch them all (good stuff).
