Question engine swap info....anything scary..??

hello...i just bought my wife a 93 wrangler....(2.5L 5spd.).....its my first experience with a jeep...although i have yrs of offroading time..and fabrication tools.....
the point is i want to install a 4.0L and auto transmission from a jeep cherokee...is there any major concerns i should be worried with...my main concern is the length of the transmission...i m thinking the cherokee has a heavier duty transmission...maybe longer???? so i thought i d look for info before i jumped...although i ve bought the cherokee and the wrangler already...also having trouble locating a wrangler automatic column w/shifter...any help would be super....thanks in advance.......

Welcome to the board.....

First off, I don't think you are going to find a column shifter for the Wrangler...they were all floor shifters....after a certain year....

Second...fill our your profile...it helps us give you more accurate answers.

What year is the Cherokee?....in most cases, you can not install in engine in a vehicle that is older than the vehicle....so, if your Cherokee is an 89....most states will not let you do it....and if it is an 89 or 90....I wouldn't use that one anyway...it's the Renix FI system....which is a good system but the newer ones are better.

As for the tranny....depends on what year the Cherokee is (see why profiles help?), but there is a good chance it's an AW4.....and the front ds should also be a drivers side drop.

The one thing in your favor is that for the most part this will be a mechanical bolt in...I 'think' you will be able to get motor mounts out of another Wrangler and they should fit. The 2.5 is already FI, so you already have the electric fuel pump...I'm going to assume that it has enough volume to feed the 4.0.

Going from man to auto is a lot easier than the other way around....I would just plan on getting the console from another wrangler and using all of it's hardware.

On the Cherokee...assuming you do end up using it...don't forget that the transmission control module is under the passenger side dash....yellow box.
