The 48" red Hi-Lift would be a good choice. The Extreme can function as several additional tools, but the basic Hi-Lift is all most people need. There are some on this board who have done amazing things with the basic Hi-Lift--I can't imagine what they could do with an Extreme.

And also a first aid kit, plenty of potable water, maps, GPS, a radio transmitter of some kind - cell phone or CB if you don't have a ham license - and, best of all, a buddy in another Jeep. And be sure to tell several people you trust where you're going and when you'll be back.

I don't know, but I've read that the California desert is a rather largish place where it's best not to get lost.

EVERYTHING's easy for the guy who doesn't have to do it.
