Trans Problem 88XJ

I posted this on the Mid-Size board to no avail. Now at the risk of getting

slapped for being redundant, I will post this here in hopes of at least a reply.

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. I believe that the trans is an AW4

Thanks

David

The automatic transmission in my Cherokee has abruptly stopped shifting. It winds out in first gear. It is a 1988

Cherokee Pioneer 4.0l bone stock. This happened while it was being driven. I

have checked the fluid level, it is fine. No obnoxious smell or signs of burning.

The fluid on the stick is bright red. Can anyone point me in the right direction as

far as troubleshooting this situation. It has a Power Selection switch on the

dash. It has been in power mode since I have owned it. I'm not sure what

other information would be needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

David

The tranny is an AW4. I have never had anything quite like this happen before.

On the right side up under the lip of the lower dash is a yellow rectangular box....THAT is your transmission control module. It 'could' be your problem.

I would first make sure that the connector is plugged in correctly. Next, you might try buying another one from the junk yard. If there is no difference...then it is most likely a problem in the tranny.

Thank You JeepDawg. I have done a little research, and found that the TCU

could be part of the problem. Two other areas of interest are the TPS, and the

TVC. There is also an inline fuse and a resistor pack attached to the TCU. I will

check all of these out and see if that helps.

Thanks again for your help JD. When I get it up and running again, I'll let you

know what the problem was.

"TVC, TPS, TCU . . . . "

It's MUCH better when you push a pedal and move a lever.

EVERYTHING's easy for the guy who doesn't have to do it.

Well,,, I did a little troubleshooting today and it is definitely the TCU that has gone bad. I unplug it and can manually shift through the gears. So I

spoke to Jesus Chrysler on the phone and was quoted $787.00 for a replacement part. It seems that the part was taken out of production, and the

only one left in the system is located in New Jersey. I paid $800 for the Jeep. I guess its time to start looking in the salvage yards for an 87-90

Cherokee. If I can,t find one in salvage then I guess I have a new motor for the 72CJ.
