Big jeep down again

Well, of all days for the jeep to break down, it would have to be during a rare snowstorm. It turns out my problem wasn't a lockout hubs engaging. On the way home today, I locked the hubs and put it in full time mode for the snow and only got about 1/4 mile down the road when it started making a metallic grinding noise. I stopped to try to figure out what it was but couldn't feel anything. Just a few yards later, it made a big bang. Now my front pinion is flopping around. I spent about 1/2 hour in the snow under the jeep removing the front driveshaft. Guess it's time to start the wagoneer axle swap.

Re: Big jeep down again

That Sucks, Metallic Grinding, and Big Bangs are bad noises in my experience. Did you actually snap the pinion gear or was it something easier?

I know the sound. But it was the ring gear that went Democratic on me. Need help with the swap?

Re: Big jeep down again

I think I've decided to just keep the leaf springs. The biggest choice is whether to keep it spring under or get stock springs and go spring over. Either way, I have to outboard the front springs. I'll probably swap the axles in with the 3.55 gears in them for a few months.

Re: Big jeep down again

Sorry, I guess I should have posted to your lockout problem. I suspected that the problem was not the lockout hub but rather an axle moving out enough to lock in the retracted hub. Even though I have Superwinch hubs, after Rich posted about rollers, I thought that maybe yours were different.

Re: Big jeep down again

There is a seal against the back of the spindle that wouldn't allow the axle shaft to move out any. Even if it could, it is still splined into another gear inside the lockout that doesn't move. The locking collar moves in from the cap side. One of these days I'll have time to pull the cover. Won't have to worry about putting oil back in it since there is no pinion seal anymore. Re: Big jeep down again

You need to move back up this way! It's been quite the winter for us. The snow is nice but the ice sure did suck. If you need anymore waggy parts let me know and you can have them.

Re: Big jeep down again

Well, I'm pretty embarrassed to post this follow up. I took the front cover off and got about 1/2 a cup of oil/sludge out of the front diff. Apparently that is what caused the front pinion bearings to fail.
