What is this stuff?

Found it in the bottom of an engine in "unknown" condition...

It's everywhere in the oil, and there is a 3/4" build up in the bottom of the pan. I scraped it out, it was kinda "hardened" in the pan. But with my fingers I could loosen it into a solution again. There are "lumps" of it that can also be smeared into a fine granular solution as well.

I think it is some kind of engine additive. But what? All the bearings look good, the cam and lifters look good, there is no scarring in the cylinder walls, but no cross-hatching either.....

Re: What is this stuff?

Slick 50 looks like regular oil, but I have heard bad things about it gumming up stuff like oil pickup screens and the like. I suppose that the heat and pressure of an engine could turn it silver.

Re: What is this stuff?

If it's Glittery Silver, I'd be worried about bearings... but you did say they looked good....

Re: What is this stuff?

Looks like the crud I got out of my oil pan after I "wiped" a lobe on a camshaft.

Re: What is this stuff?

Looks like chunks of graphite from ARCO? graphite oil?

Graphite or Teflon mixes with oil like gravel mixes with pancakes, they don't.

There's lots of different scam products out there.

Re: What is this stuff?

No real clue from me Aaron, but 99% of the "core" engines I get back look like that in the bottom when I do teardowns. I'm guessing it's lack of oil changes, engine metal, and bake at 230 for 6000miles plus.

I'd say DD called "Bingo", but then again I don't rip apart junk that someone else abused (just the junk that I abuse).

Go wash your hands please.

Re: What is this stuff?

I once saw a late 60s Plymouth Valiant with a slant 6 that was so full of that sludge it had started to cake up to the point that you could roll it into a ball and toss it around the shop. It turned out that the guy who owned the car never changed the oil, he just added a little when it got low.
