Picking up an Engine in Hollister, NC tomorrow

OK,
1973 Buick 455 complete except for the carb
The guy says it will run, but who knows.
(FYI my current 455 has a rod through the block)

I don't want to build it if I don't have to. I have a line on another one that would be great to put on a stand and go through, and I don't have the funds to do that right now....

What would you do to this engine before you installed it?
Hook up a starter and check compression?
Hook up an oil guage and check pressure?

Would you strip the new: water pump, oil pump, timing chain/ gears, HEI system off of the currently blown engine and install them on the "unknown" engine?

Would you pull the heads and take a look.

I know I have good heads on my blown engine, should I swap um right off the bat. Or wait and see what the "unknown" ones do?

or- would you just slap it in there, hook up the FI, and turn the key? (anything living in there should find it's way out the flowmasters....)

Re: Picking up an Engine in Hollister, NC tomorrow

I 'would' say, turn the key and run it.....except for the "no carb" issue...to me that puts up a red flag....why is the carb gone?

Given that angle...pull it apart...compare heads...swap in the known good parts....and go with it....in relative terms, the gasket kit is cheap.

BTW...see if you can find out the mileage....1973? Expect the odometer to max out at 99,999...so, assume 100K + what ever it reads.

Atleast check the compression and heads while it is off. It would suck to install it and then have to pull it right back out. What are you getting it for a couple of rubber bands and a piece of used gum?

If the guy says it will still run...then RUN it! And then after you run it, do the compression check with HIS starter.

I must be getting old.....someone refresh my memory......is the 455 Boo-ah the same fit-up as the 455 Oldzmabubble with the two little "Kitty Ears" sticking up on the bell housing? Isn't Caddy the same as Olds with the kitty ears up?
