O/T Have a little fun in the cold weather

It's danged cold here in Washidaho. So, remembering back to when I lived in Wisconsin I tried a little experiment. I boiled a pan of water (with food coloring in it so it'd show up in the picture). Then ran outside and threw the pan of water into the air.

The water instantly turned into frozen mist. This photo was take at 0F.

Your challenge is to figure out why! A little hint: The colder temperature, the more dramatic the show!

Yep... too much time, never enough money. As the Lovely Mrs. LEVE is fond of saying: Twice the husband and half the money.

So, like when I was a kid... ya gotta make your own fun.

I am guessing it has something to do with the Mpemba Effect. Although I cannot explain the physics behind it, simply that hot water freezes faster than cold water. Or something like that.

Re: O/T Have a little fun in the cold weather

here's something to try:

Soap bubble skin is made up of two layers of soap molecules surrounding a layer of water molecules. Since temperatures of 10F and lower are below the freezing point of water, the thin layer of water in the bubble skin freezes quickly before the bubble has a chance to burst.
Bubbles that are made by drawing a wand through cold air freeze almost instantly but bubbles blown by mouth contain warm air. When blown bubbles meet cold air, the warm air inside the bubble contracts as it cools causing the skin to wrinkle. The soap film adds strength to the frozen layer of water within the bubble wall. Because the bubbles freeze quickly, they will be small.

Re: O/T Have a little fun in the cold weather

does it have anything to do with the being at or below triple point of water...where you can go from vapor (boiling water in the air) to solid (the frozen mist)

i hate chemistry

Re: O/T Have a little fun in the cold weather

If I mentioned surface tension would that be a hint?

No, its not triple point. The triple is pressure related. Below the triple point pressure for a given substance, it has no liquid form. At standard pressure, C02 will not exist as a liquid.

Nope, not a winner Taz... surface tension has nothing to do with it...
