Wagoneer update

Well cleaned up the top where I took the roof off. Gutted the doors, and started welding the rear doors shut. I got the tailgate off, and started taking the old dash out.

Re: Wagoneer update

Interesting! How are you going about welding the doors?

Re: Wagoneer update

I started off by tacking them at the top bottom and middle, and going back and fourth until, it was tacked up about every 1" then ran the bead. I blew a couple holes in the metal so had to go back over some spots. I still have the other side to do but that might wait until the dash is done.

Re: Wagoneer update

Are you welding the inside too? I don't think you can count on just the outer skin for strength.

On the one hand, I'm worried that chassis flex will fatigue crack the welds if the joint area is not as stiff as the rest of the body. On the other hand, I guess you're not building a show piece, so if the skin does crack after a few outings you can just glue it back together.

Re: Wagoneer update

When I build the the roll cage I plan on tying it all together. I also plan on putting diamond plate from behind the seats along the inside all the way back and over the top of the body to help stiffen it up. I didn't plan on welding along the inside, but I never thought about fatigue cracks either, so it probably wouldn't hurt to do the inside too.
