350 Engine with Factory Exhaust Manifold

I am tired of replacing header gaskets and header bolts. Does anyone know if the factory Chevy 350 exhaust manifolds will fit in an 88 yj? It seems like it will fit, but I was wondering if anyone knew for sure before I purchase. Oh and I do have a 350 in the yj by the way.
Thanks.

Re: 350 Engine with Factory Exhaust Manifold

There are tons of 350's with manifolds in CJ Jeeps. The YJ frame is a tad wider up front and the motor mounts should be easier to work around. Plus there are several different variations of SBC manifolds to choose from. If the first set you try doesn't look like it'll fit, go back to the yard and find another variation. Re: 350 Engine with Factory Exhaust Manifold

I would be willing to bet that they next time someone asks about putting headers on you will chime in and let them know about your experience.

You are wise to dump the headers....high maintance and they don't do any good for the RPM ranges we use on the trail.

The truth is, you have a couple of good options.....the main problem is that you need a center dumping manifold so that your exhaust will clear.....on my CJ (passenger side drop), I have to run the right side down under my oil pan where it meets up with the left side into a Y-pipe just behind the oil filter....I believe you have a drivers side drop...opposite problem....in either case, I don't know of anyone that can get a pipe down past the xfer case....unless you go down under...hence, the stock manifold that exits out the rear won't work.

Sanderson makes a block hugger header that exits out the center....down side is that you will still be tight for space....

My suggestion is stock GM Ram Head manifolds. I lucked out and found some 2 1/2" manifolds...but the 2" will be fine. Gives you plenty of wiggle room for exhaust pipes and makes it easy to work on. For gaskets, use the stock GM stainles steel gasket...it's actually 2 or 3 thin layers....muffler shops like to use them because they don't come back with issues.....and you can re-use it.

Re: 350 Engine with Factory Exhaust Manifold

I found some stock manifolds on ebay with a center dump. I have a dana 60 in front with a dana 300 xfer case. I am planning(hopeing) that I will be able to tie the manifold into my existing exhaust, with modifications of course, since these manifolds have a center dump. They even have an an angled mount to connect the exhaust. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...TRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

Are they the old style Ram Horn exhaust? If so make sure they dont have any cracks. Ive seen several that have cracked over the years. The old Ram Horns can get a little pricey sometimes.

Yes they are the Ram Horn style. They are brand new after market. I can get a pair shipped for about $130, that didn't seem too bad to me.

I believe you are going to have issues with the curved outlets...the drivers side needs to go straight down and under the pan...

This is what I have...

That's what I am going to do too.
Thanks for the info.
