OT(sorry): Skydiving World Record in town today

We just got home from watching a guy at the local airport trying to break his own world record by jumping 600 times in 24 hours. He's an ex green beret and does it to raise money for charity.
I really didn't care that much when I first heard of it, but we could see the plane from work today and it was pretty friggin cool. As straight up as they can, then as soon as they make altitude and he jumps, they nose dive and land and pick him up again and off they go.
He needs to go once every 2:24 to make the record.
We left after he had been going for 12 1/2 hours and he was at number 320.
I was kicking myself for not taking the cam-corder with us, but one of the Indy stations had a chopper there earlier today.

HERE'S THEIR STORY that has a pretty good video clip from the chopper of one lap.

HERE'S THE GUYS WEBSITE

It's pretty neat, even if you're not into skydiving.

Man!
I though I was a hot shot for doing 6 in one day in the military!

2 min. 24 seconds... That plane must be taking off Straight up and he must be pulling at about 6 feet!
He barely has time to change chutes before they are at altitude again.

I don't even want to guess how tired & sore you would afterwards from the day long adrenalin rush!

He did it, and then some.
640 in 24 hours. That averages to one every 2:15.
We talked with one of his crew last night. They said he was on a liquid diet for two days to avoid bowel movements, had a pee jug, energy bars, water, and gatorade in the plane.

A note to his character, when the media was interviewing him this morning he never once said "I", it was always "we". His ground crew, pilots, chute packers, etc. worked just as long/hard as he did.

Maybe he trained you?

[ QUOTE ]
After high school, he (JAY STOKES) joined the Army in 1974 and began a 24-year career, including 21 years in Special Forces, the Green Berets. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1998. While in the special forces he earned ratings as a military freefall instructor and jumpmaster, videographer, tandem master, and HALO/Scuba mission-qualified, among others.

He jumped when they hit 2100 feet.

As for the plane(s), they used three...........

Up;

Then right back down;

As I said before, the jumping is cool, but seeing the plane from work is what got me interested. The pilot should be in the record books as well. Two hour shifts between three pilots, I believe they said.

He was unbuckling before even hitting the ground. Then 2 or 3 people ripped it off of him while another flopped the next one over his shoulders. Clipped the leg straps, hoped in the plane that had barely come to a stop, and off it went again.

His son is a special olymipian. I'm not sure what his affliction is.

Ya gotta have confidence in your packers...I don't know why, but this ol' ditty kept running through my mind: Blood on the risers

Is everybody happy said the sergeant looking up
Our hero feebly answered "Yes" and then they hooked him up,
He jumped into the slipstream, and he twisted twenty times,
And he ain't going to jump no more.

Chorus
Glory glory what a hell of a way to die,
When your hanging from your braces and you don't know how to fly,
Glory glory what a hell of a way to die,
And he ain't going to jump no more.

He counted loud , he counted long and waited for the shock,
He felt the wind, he felt the air, he felt that awful drop,
He pulled his lines, the silk came down and wrapped around his legs
And he ain't going to jump no more.

Chorus

The days he lived and loved and laughed kept running through his mind,
He thought about the medics and wondered what they would find,
He thought about the girl back home, the one he left behind.
And he ain't going to jump no more.

Chorus

The lines all wrapped around his neck, the D rings broke his dome,
His lift webs wrapped themselves in knots around each skinny bone,
His canopy became his shroud as he hurtled to the ground,
And he ain't going to jump no more.

Chorus

The ambulance was on the spot, the jeeps were running wild,
The medics, they clapped their hands and rolled their sleeves and smiled,
For it had been a week or more, since last a chute had failed,
And he ain't going to jump no more.

Chorus

He hit the ground, the sound was "splat", the blood went spurting high,
His pals were heard to say "Oh what a lovely way to die",
They rolled him up still in his 'chute, and poured him from his boots,
And he ain't going to jump no more.

Chorus

There was blood upon his lift webs, there was blood upon his chute,
Blood that came a trickling from his paratrooper boots,
And there he lay like jelly in the welter of his gore,
And he ain't going to jump no more.

Chorus

Re: OT(sorry): Skydiving World Record in town toda

When I was in, people made fun of me for buying a $270 special made knife for para cutaways.
When I started, you actually had to cut the leaders or lines away, no quick disconnects.

$270 was a month's pay back then!
In 16 years of parachuting I only had to cutaway once and pull the secondary...

That knife was VERY CHEAP after that!
In my opinion, it would have been a bargain at 5 times the price!
------------------

I think it's cool he broke a record, and he couldn't be doing it for a better cause than wounded and survivors.
