O-T Stupid XP Home edition

I just a new Dell laptop and I can't seem to get the views I want.

The address bar cannot be displayed or dragged to a new location:

And my Icons on the desktop keep dissapearing unless they are ones I added. All the rest dissapear.

Re: O-T Stupid XP Home edition

As for the address bar problem, might I suggest MOZILLA instead of IE. Obviously Dell has some bastardized version of IE installed with all of their front-end crap pre-loaded.
Now on the icon issue, no clue. Kinda sounds like a video driver, resolution setting issue, but that's a pretty long shot.
Did you update all of the drivers when you got it? You might start with that if not.
Beyond that, I'll just shut-up and let the resident IT guys chime in.

EDIT:
Oh, you said your personal icons stay visible when the pre-loaded ones disappear. That really is bizzare. Disregard the driver thing then. Well, it's still a good idea, but won't help with this issue.
Good luck.

Re: O-T Stupid XP Home edition

Yes, first thing I checked. Checking and unchecking the address bar just turns that "address" tab off and on. I still can't move it to were I can view the whole address.

Stranger still, I just notice the original IE viewer has the address bar, the new IE windows I opened from that original IE viewer (those that are opened from a hyper link) don't have the address bar..
Hmmmm....

Did I mention how much I hate Laptop keyboards ??

Dump IE, get Firefox...and get a trackball for the laptop....
I can open IE and Firefox at the same time....(ok, IE first)....and while I'm waiting on IE to finaly show the default page, I'm already browsing with Firefox....

Even my wife uses Firefox now......

Re: O-T Stupid XP Home edition

Yes firefox is good...
Otherwise, uncheck the "lock the toolbars" and drag it where you want it, and lock it again.
Standard icons? Like what "My computer" and "My Documents"?

First make sure "auto arrange" is not on:

Then if you are intending to have my documents, my computer and internet explorer on your desktop:
1. Right click on your desktop.
2. Choose properties.
3. Go to the desktop tab.
4. Click advanced
5. Make sure what you want is checked.

Otherwise let me know what you need

Re: O-T Stupid XP Home edition

Another vote for Firefox here. I like it much better han IE. Make it your default browser and you'll soon forget IE is on there.

I also recommend going into your system properties control (start/control panel/system/advanced tab/ performance settings, which opens performance options window/visual effects tab, select Adjust for best performance, OK!

You'll turn off BS XP bells and whistles that do no good, or you can choose which ones if any you want to keep.

Re: O-T Stupid XP Home edition

Thanks guys, I'll check things over tonight and try Firefox again. I should of thought of that stuff.

Funny how I can fix all these problems when I'm at work and my brain shuts off when I get home. Maybe that's a good thing.
