Daily Driver
I have got my self in a situation where I have to drive my almost stock 1980 CJ-7 258 auto as a commuter everyday about 60 miles a day for about a year. My Question is what can I do to make it a stable daily driver I have had this jeep for about a year or so I haven't had to do anything to it but are ther some things I need to have done before I start this long daily drive?

Re: Daily Driver
I have used a 1980 CJ7 as a daily driver since April of 1987 with only a few problems several of which
were inherited from the previous owner. I drove 45-50 miles/day round trip.

I had the 258 until about four years ago and have the T-176. During the first couple years, I made sure I
kept plenty of quarters in the glove box to call for help but it's been very reliable since I got those early
bugs out and the cost of a phone call went to 35 cents.

I did suck water into a cyliner once, broke a piston and blew the cylinder wall out but it had 150k miles
on it. I installed another 258 which I rebuilt and it lasted 85k until I decided I wanted a V8.

Re: Daily Driver
Well if nothings wrong with it just have a good look
under the hood, wireing, hoses, if anything looks ragged
replace it, maybe a new thermostat. Probably should change
the gear oil ( diffs,trans,t-case) if you haven't already,
and a good lube.
Chiltons or Haynes has a good maintance schedule.
That, and of course keep your fingers crossed !!!

You would definitely want to have locking hubs in front if you don't already so you can disengage the front axle, I go again....MATCH the tires carefully. See my post to DANA titled Pressure Gauges Accuracy or some such thread. By matching the tires, you don't shred the spider gears neeedlessly. Believe me, that suggestion about replacing the thermostat is right on! I lost a darn good engine because an old thermostat stuck. Now I change 'em every two years, and of course drill a tiny hole in the plate.

Re: Daily Driver
Get a K&N air filter for it. It is simple & can increase performance & gas milage. You can get them from 4wd hardware, Summit or a bunch of places.
