Oil Pan Gasket

Well, at $30 do I need a 1 piece rubber, or will ATV do?

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

I thought it was worth it when I pulled the pan on my 4.2L.

I like the 1 piece rubber, just don't forget the dabs of sealant. I put them on everyone elses cause I don't want to do it again.

I agree 100%, plus they come with little screw in tabs that hold them up for you. I haven't tried, but many say thay are re-usable at least once if needed.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

I was able to reuse mine....(back in the old days when I had a 4.2L)

RTV works....BUT, it's more work and not as sure.....and a lot more work to remove than just the one piece gasket....

So, Scott....what does a pan gasket have to do with your SOA?

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

If you ever saw what happens to that pan when it's hot and you plunge it into a water puddle or ford a stream you would spring for the rubber gasket and learn to use a torque wrench on the pan bolts!

Too bad they don't make one with an 'O' ring type expansion sealer in it!
-------------------------

When you get the pan very warm, and dip it in cold water long enough to actually start rapidly cooling the oil in the pan,

--not like driving in the rain where the pan is constantly exposed and keeps a relative constant temp,
or when you splash through a puddle and are pretty much out of the water before the pan contorts--

You simply would not believe the contortions that pan goes through when it's hot and gets dunked in cold water!
It looks like a snake dropped in a hot frying pan!

Lots of guys can't understand why they get water in the oil...
--------------------------

What trail drivers need is a not too heavy pan,
With reinforcement in the bottom for rocks, ect.,

A reinforcement ring around the bolt surface to keep the pan in contact with the block when it contorts.
Some extra bolts wouldn't hurt either...

Some cross slot cooling tubes wouldn't be a waste of time, IF they didn't make the pan stick down too far...

Re: Oil Pan Gasket

So no shoe-goo-guy-pan!

Thanks, $30 is best then.

Nothing John, just a very messy garage floor.

Before I finally adopted WBCarver's "time is $$" philosophy, I'd have gone cork... Now, I wish they made a true 1pc. gasket for an AMC V8!
