frame swap

i am wondering about a frame swap from a 1990YJ into an 85Cj7, I have a few spots im not to happy with and a mint yj frame at my disposal. Is it easier to fix the spots or swap frames? also did the 85cj7's come with amc20's in the rear and dana30's up front? I was also wondering about swapping out the rear-end for the dana30 out of the YJ

Re: frame swap

I would do this is a heartbeat. The YJ frames is a tad wider in the front I think but it has been done before. Keep your dana 20 and 30 from the CJ, the YJ 35 is weaker and the front YJ 30 is probably still vacuum disconnect. Fuel filler will be on the wrong side, and a couple of body tub mounts will be different. I am sure some other odds and ends as well, but IMHO a better alternative than patching a rusty frame... at least in the long run.

Re: frame swap

The YJ will have a dana 35 rear and it is a step backward from the amc 20. The CJ is also 5 on 5-1/2 wheel pattern and the YJ is 5 on 4-1/2. You would have to swap both axles which means swapping transfer cases too since the fronts are offset opposite.

Re: frame swap

another thing is I have a brand new fiberglass tub being delivered in the next week or so, new front fenders and a new tank, I was also wondering about tuffy consoles, is it better to go overhead or between the seats, because overhead sumone could prolly jump on it and Im not sure how much it can take as I spent alot more then i wanted to on my stereo.

Re: frame swap

Wow, if your gonna go that far, just swap all of the CJ driveline into the YJ frame, tub it (please use the CJ fenders and grill) and you'll have a very fine rig indeed.

Now the bad news. Most here will simply say that a big stereo in a Jeep is way overkill. If you ever see off road or intend to have your top off, you place the system in harms way by exposing it to the elements and thieves. Jeeps are noisy enough you can't hear it worth a damn anyway, and even with a hard top, your asking for someone to jump right in a rip you off.

I would go Tuffy between the seats and try to install the high $$ dollar components there. Good luck, you have a lot of work ahead of you, but I for one will be jealous when you are done.

Re: frame swap

Im going to run the I4 in the YJ for the first little bit until I the I6 is rebuilt, and thanks for the info about the stereo, i do realise this about the elements, so I plan to buy speakers made for it, oh and I am still using the original chrome grill from the cj and new repro. fenders.
