Jeep CJ 5 Tub Swap

What is the difference, if any, between a 1974 CJ 5 frame/body and a 1978 CJ 5 frame/body. I want to swap the body from the '78 to the frame of the '74. Any other information about the two different years other than axles would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Jeep CJ 5 Tub Swap

Some time in there they lengthened the front end to make room for the AMC inline six. Check the length of the hoods to see if they are the same. If not the '78 frame will probably be longer by the same amount.

In CJ7s they started using a fully boxed frame in '77. I don't know iff they also went fully boxed for the 5 frame. If they did the body mount locations might have also changed.

Will, the Official Historian, will check in with the correct years soon. In the mean time, get under them both with a sketchbook and tape measure to see how things will match up.

the body mounts are in different places. The 74 should have a different windshield frame, although i havent tried a later one to see if it fits or not.

Re: Jeep CJ 5 Tub Swap

The 74 frame rails are parallel, the 78 frame rails are wider in the rear. The change happened in 76. Anything made for 76 and newer will not fit 75 and older. (ask me about the nerf bars I bought for my 75 that I had to weld extra tube on to make them work)

on edit:
The windshield changed in 76 too. pre 76, windshield almost vertical, post 76, windshield somewhat swept back. (Lucky for me, Best Top makes this very clear in their ordering info, so when I got my supertop, it fit my 75 just right ).

I will also have some parts soon like a 304 and manual trans and a transfer case. I am going to install a chevy 5.7 w/ fuel injection 350 turbo and a np 203.It will take some time just recovering from shoulder surgery

The hoods should be the same. 72 was when they were lengthened for the AMC engines.
