best way to check upper ball joints?

Jeep (84 CJ) just went in for an inspection and they said the upper ball joints need replacing. Front end seems tight to me with no play in front tires but I haven't jacked the front end up this the best way to check? wheels off the ground and look for play (vertical or horizontal) in the joint?

I like a pry bar behind the joint. Jack it up pull in the top and bottom of the tire, then get under and pry around on them any movement is a bad thing. Good luck. I have been fighting gremlins in my front end for almost a year now.
